BREAKING NEWS: Travel Visa for Tourists to Enter Brazil Update

Last updated: December 21, 2023

As we sit here and type this update, we are writing blog posts about our memorable trip to Brazil in October 2023. Yes, the visa requirement is coming back on January 10th, 2024 and thankfully information has been shared about the process. While the process is not as easy as we would have liked AND Canadians are at a disadvantage compared to Americans, it is not as bad as it could be, and will not be a deterrent for us to return to Brazil one day.

Nationals of Australia, Canada and the United States will need a visitor visa to travel to Brazil as of January 10th, 2024. If you are a citizen of these countries, you can request an electronic visa (e-Visa) and there is no need to come to the Consulate to have the document issued. The e-Visa request can be made on this website: brazil.vfsevisa.com. The fee will be US$ 80.90. Processing time is approximately 5 business days.

For our next trip to Brazil though, we will need to go through the visa process, which is easy enough but adds cost and hassle. More information is available here. Particular annoying is that you need a passport sized photo and a printed bank statement showing transactions for the last 30 days with at least $2,000USD for travel. Visas for Canadians and Australians are only effective for 5 years and Americans get up to 10 years.

Past information:

Good news for Canadians, Americans and Australians looking to travel to Brazil this year!  Today the Brazilian Consulate in Toronto announced that the resumption of visitor visa requirements for nationals of Australia, Canada and the United States has been extended and will now take effect on January 10th, 2024.

As part of a reciprocal measure, Brazil had been planning to reintroduce a visa requirement for citizens of the aforementioned countries to travel to Brazil. The proposed implementation date had been October 1st, 2023, but this date was quickly approaching without much further detail regarding the process.

This surely comes as welcome news to many who were concerned of potential impacts to their upcoming travel plans!
