Review: Luxury Beach Getaway – W Costa Rica – Reserva Conchal Resort Review

At a glance:

The W Costa Rica – Reserva Conchal features unique architecture that blends in with the jungle setting to offer guests a distinctly W beach resort experience. The resort is both very hip and modern, while also being low-key and toned down for the brand.

What it actually is: A high-end modern hotel with a prime beach location.

What it is not:  Easy to leave (due to both its beautiful location, and the logistics of physically getting off the property to enjoy other local things).

Room: Sunset Treehouse King

Time of year: winter (Holiday season)

Scores:

Hotel Design: 94 – We love the modern tropical design of this resort with rooms spread across several separate build on the hillside facing the ocean. A beautiful path weaves from the lobby and rooms through the jungle and leads to a nice beach-side pool and restaurant.

Location: 95 – Perched on a hill above one of Costa Rica’s nicest beaches and surrounded by the Reserva Conchal nature reserve, the W has a prized location in Guanacaste. Relatively short trips to restaurants in Potrero, Playa Flamingo and even Tamarindo.

Sleep: 94 – Comfortable beds, powerful AC and generally good soundproofing are appreciated – watch out for the rooms next to suites (which have in-room foosball tables), as these can generate a lot of noise.

Service: 88 – Friendly and professional service at all levels – perhaps a little too polished at times. We had difficulty getting our car on several occasions.

Room Design: 90 – Rooms are bright and airy with floor to ceiling windows and views of the ocean or jungle. Dual rain showers (with outside views!) are a highlight. Not a fan of the exposed (and cluttered) mini-bar areas.

Room Amenities: 86 – Large private balconies with ceiling fans, nice bath products, and everything else you would expect at this caliber of resort.

Hotel Amenities: 93 – Great pool options, a nice and spacious gym, good spa, easy beach access, and complimentary non-motorized watersports along with a zip-line to the beach. We find the onsite restaurants to be average and pricey for lunch/dinner.

Vibe: 83 – Costa Rica meets California tucked away in nature reserve. While the privacy and security is appreciated, the hassle of multiple security gates and valet-only parking make the experience a little less casual than you’d expect for beach holiday destination.

Cleanliness / Maintenance: 90 – Very good. No issues.

Value / Extras & Perks: 88 – Rates are high, but the lack of comparable resort options in this beautiful area help to justify the splurge. Marriott Elite members can chose breakfast as a benefit, which is above average in its offerings and quality.

OVERALL: 90.1

Would we stay again? Yes
