Review: Thompson Hotel Palm Springs – A Trendy Urban Resort Getaway in the Desert

At a glance:

Located in the center of Palm Springs, the Thompson Palm Springs is a trendy urban hotel with a resort feel where people seem to enjoy lounging by the pool on weekends at the Lola Rose Pool Club.

What is actually is: An upscale hotel designed like a resort that fits right into the Palm Springs scene.

What it is not: A quiet secluded resort with privacy. Some of the rooms are either not very private or may feel too enclosed.

Room: 1 King Bed View Room with Balcony

Time of year: Spring

Scores:

Hotel Design: 77 – Interesting use of urban space, feels somewhat like a resort, while occupying the upper floors of a commercial building. Very trendy bohemian desert design. Overall, it is a bit clunky and awkward: you have to walk through the restaurant every time you go to your room or leave the hotel.

Location: 85 – Good for being in the center of Palm Springs; very walkable and bikeable. If you just want to spend time at the hotel and walk to central things in Palm Springs, this location will be appealing to you as you do not need to rent a car. It is also close to the airport.

Sleep: 80 – Very comfortable bedding and pillows. We did not experience any a/c issues like other guests reported, but the road noise was an issue for us as it was quite loud at times. Soundproofing was not great in general, as we could hear people talking in the room beside us but we did have an adjoining room.

Service: 90 – No issues. Generally, all the staff were pleasant and helpful.

Room Design: 85 – Compact but functional and stylish without being over the top.

Room Amenities: 84 – Great shower, large balcony with comfortable chairs (lack of privacy because we were facing a busy restaurant and it was noisy at times). Mini fridge did not keep things that cold. Bathrobes, slippers, and 2 bottles of water were provided daily.

Hotel Amenities: 79 – Small shallow pool with a fairly crowded lounge area right in front of the restaurant (which is also busy and popular). Nice, quiet and private seating areas tucked away around the property (you needed to go look for them). Pet friendly, as they do not charge additional fees for pets. Well equipped gym and complimentary bike rentals (included in resort fee).

Vibe: 79 – Typical Palm Springs lounge by the pool on weekends vibe for families. Seemed more adult oriented but there were kids.

Cleanliness/Maintenance: 94 – Generally no issues, as it was still new. Housekeeping seemed of the rush variety for minor things, i.e. our balcony needed to be mopped.

Value / Extras & Perks: 90 – Pretty good for Hyatt Globalists as we did not have to pay a resort fee, the daily breakfast included was very good. We also enjoyed the complimentary glass of wine on arrival.

OVERALL: 84.3

Would we stay again? probably not
