Review: The Shay, a Destination by Hyatt – A new-ish and fun upscale hotel in trendy Culver City!

At a glance:

The Shay, a Destination by Hyatt is a very well-rounded urban getaway in the Los Angeles area. It offers comfortable rooms and decent amenities to those visiting the area as tourists and those looking for a staycation.

What is actually is: Upscale but casual boutique hotel conveniently located to a number of places in the Los Angeles area (by LA standards of course).

What it is not: A Kimpton in La, but it kinda feels like one, based on our experience, and having stayed at 2 Kimptons in Los Angeles!

Time of year: Summer

Room: King Bed, Balcony

Scores:

Hotel Design: 83 – Modern boutique hotel with California flair. Hotel design balances more funky and modern design elements throughout and the rooms are more restrained. Picture being able to buy a pair of Goodr’s at the hotel and read one of the many cookbooks in the hotel common areas.

Location: 89 – Walking access to the newer and hip spots in Culver City, access to other popular areas like Santa Monica or downtown via the metro, and fairly close to the airport.

Sleep: 90 – Comfortable bed and linens but some noise from other rooms due to soundproofing as we could hear people walking in the room above us.

Service: 89 – Friendly and proactive service. Definitely above average.

Room Design: 89 – Room had a slight industrial feel to it. Above average in size, with a large entrance area that seemed like a waste of space. The bathroom was spacious with a large shower with excellent water pressure.

Room Amenities: 90 – For a hotel room in the city, it offers everything you need and more. Our room had a mini fridge, Nespresso machine, and decent toiletries. We booked a room with a balcony and it had decent outdoor furniture.

Hotel Amenities: 85 – Small rooftop pool area, 2 restaurants by José Andrés Group Group (Butterfly for Mexican inspired and Zaytinya for Mediterranean inspired food), a lobby bar, and a well equipped gym.

Vibe: 90 – Upscale, but chill. Despite the rooftop pool, it did not have a party vibe. The hotel seemed popular with people wanting a stay-cation or in the area for an event, like a graduation.

Cleanliness/Maintenance: 94 – The room was very clean and well maintained. The housekeeping refresh was excellent and way more than we expected. Other things in the hotel seemed well maintained too.

Value / Extras & Perks: 92 – Pretty good for Hyatt Globalists. No room upgrade was available as they were pretty full. Breakfast benefit was excellent; the voucher explained everything in detail and was super easy to use.

OVERALL: 89.1

Would we stay again? Yes!
