At a glance:
Built in 1980 and last renovated in 2021, the Hyatt Regency Maui is an 810-room resort with a wide range of amenities located on 40 acres along Ka’anapali Beach. With a variety of guest room types, including 30 suites, it offers comfortable and slightly upscale accommodations in the Ka’anapali resort area.
What is actually is: A large resort with extensive amenities. Generally, it’s a solid 4-star property with 5-star pricing.
What it is not: A modern resort. While some aspects feel new and refreshed, others are quite dated.
Time of year: Summer
Room Type: 2 queens mountain view
Scores:
Hotel Design: 83 – The resort is on spacious grounds with beach access and three guestroom towers. For such a large hotel, it doesn’t feel overly crowded, except at some shared amenities like the club lounge. They have paid attention to the landscaping and incorporated natural features like ponds, areas for birds (such as swans), and spots to enjoy views around the property and beach.
Location: 85 – The resort is located at the southernmost part of the Ka’anapali Beach stretch. It’s about a 15-minute walk along the beach path to Whalers Village and a 25-minute walk to the beach by the Sheraton, which offers calmer swimming conditions and good snorkeling. The resort is on the beach, but it’s not the nicest stretch, as swimming conditions vary, especially now due to beach erosion. Shops and services in the Lahaina area are about a 10-minute drive away.
Sleep: 90 – With soft and plush bedding, we were very comfortable sleeping here.
Service: 88 – Our interactions with the front desk staff were positive, and they went above and beyond for some things. However, a few improvements could be made, such as better communication about Hyatt Globalist benefits, the resort fee inclusions, and letting us know about the parking lot closer to our room tower. The Club Lounge also seemed understaffed.
Room Design : 80 – The room was spacious and had a good flow, with modern Hawaiian design elements. The bedroom area has a small daybed and table, a desk area, and the entrance has storage for suitcases, etc. The bathroom is separated into a sink area and a closed-off area with the toilet and the bathtub/shower. The balcony was comfortable and private.
Room Amenities: 88 – Standard amenities include a mini-fridge, robes, refillable water bottles, a Keurig type coffee machine with mediocre coffee, and non-branded coconut mango toiletries.
Hotel Amenities: 79 – The resort has two pools—one that is more adult-oriented and the other more child-oriented with a mini water park and waterslide. There is a Regency Club Lounge that serves breakfast, snacks, and evening hors d’oeuvres with a paid bar. The hotel also has a spa, a gym, a few restaurants and bars, a shave ice stand, an on-site luau, penguin and bird exhibits, various food and souvenir shops, and a water activities rental service. The resort fee covers some activities, such as fitness classes, while others have an associated fee. The hotel also has a towel caddy accessible with your room key that tracks towel returns using RFID technology. As a result of the renovation, the grotto pool bar is now gone and have been replaced with a more child oriented water/play area in the pool.
Vibe: 70 – Families, couples, and groups on vacation in Maui. The hotel is also popular for corporate events.
Cleanliness/Maintenance: 89 – Overall, the hotel is very well maintained, and housekeeping does a great job. Some common areas, like the Club Lounge, seem a little dated and worn down, but the rest is above what you might expect at an older hotel of this style.
Value / Extras & Perks: 90 – Generally, the cash rates for this hotel are very high, which is common for Maui. If you are a Hyatt Globalist, it’s possible to get good value, especially due to the points redemption cost. The $50 per day resort fee plus the $35-$40 per day for parking reduces the overall value. As Hyatt Globalists who use points, the resort fee and parking fee are waived, and breakfast is included at the lounge, which makes it worthwhile. Your mileage may vary.
