At a glance:
The SOMM Woodinville, Autograph Collection is a welcome addition to the wine area just 30 minutes north east of Seattle. With 164 rooms, the hotel offers an upscale resort experience located in the heart of Woodinville wine country for hotel guests and those looking to plan special events. Currently, the hotel and onsite amenities like the restaurant, bar, and spa are in their soft opening phase and this review will reflect on some of that.
What is actually is: A wine themed upscale hotel with resort and conference amenities centrally located in downtown Woodinville.
What it is not: Not a family focused hotel.
Time of year: Fall
Room Type: Premium room with king bed
Scores:
Hotel Design: 85 – The hotel has 4 storeys and looks more like an apartment building than a hotel. Inside, the large and spacious lobby blends Pacific Northwest accents in an elevated way to compliment a wine theme fit for the hotel’s name. They also incorporated lots of unique artwork in the common areas of the hotels, including the hallways. The hotel also wants to be the destination in Woodinville year round and has a rooftop bar and restaurant, and at night, spotlights illuminate the sky outside.
Location: 87 – The SOMM is located about 30 minutes north east of Seattle in Woodinville. It is within walking distance to a number of restaurants, bars, and wineries. It is also conveniently located to access the Sammamish River Trail. The area is also developing with lots of residential housing and commercial under construction.
Sleep: 90 – The bed was very comfortable and the pillows were very plush, but seemed a little small for a king size bed. The soundproofing between rooms was average, as you could hear people walking above. HVAC noise was heard but minimal.
Service: 80 – Overall, service was good and exceeded our expectations. They are new and experiencing some learning curves, i.e. no information about the hotel and amenities was shared with us at check-in and no one knew what the breakfast benefit is for Titanium Elites. It would have been nice to know more about the wine blending activity and how to book that since the hotel markets it as a perk for overnight guests (we are very sad we missed out!).
Room Design: 85 – The room design is classic with some trendy elements, like the top wall section with the funky wallpaper. The room was a decent size, but the view was not the best, as it faces another building under construction. As for storage, there was a small closet that can accommodate 1 suitcase, but the bench can accommodate a 2nd, and there were lots of drawers. As for seating and workspace, there is a chair in the corner, but no desk. The bathroom has a smart layout with a separate room for the toilet and a large enclosed shower that did not leak water everywhere. It shows they paid attention to past hotel’s design mistakes to not make them themselves! The wooden photo with a map of wineries in Woodinville is neat, but oddly placed in the toilet room.
Room Amenities: 85 – The room has an extra large television, a Nespresso machine, kettle with tea, a mini fridge, robes, a large safe, a balcony with some seating (chair, table, and small round bench), and decent toiletries.
Hotel Amenities: 85 – The hotel has a spa, indoor and outdoor event spaces, a small boutique selling things like wine/snacks/general merchandise, a restaurant/bar area on the ground floor, and one on the top floor, a wine blending area, and a gym located on the lower level near parking. The gym was well equipped with lots of cardio machines, including 2 Peloton bikes. Breakfast at Bin 47 was good, and they were testing things out as part of the soft launch. The menu strives to offer less generic versions of popular breakfast things, i.e. a breakfast sandwich with pork belly and sweet chili kimchi, and a breakfast pizza during weekend brunch. On each floor, there is water station with pitchers that can be filled and a freezer with ice bags. Drip coffee is available in the lobby in the morning.
Vibe: 90 – Sophisticated but casual. Adult oriented wine getaways – couples and girls trips to wine country.
Cleanliness/Maintenance: 86 – The hotel is very new and we may have been the first people to sleep in our room. That aside, they make some design choices that will hopefully hold up well with frequent use of the rooms and others may not.
Value / Extras & Perks: 85 – All guests have access to all amenities, including a complimentary wine blending activity where you can make a bottle of wine to take home. As for Marriott Elite guests, we received an upgrade to a premium room, received our welcome points, and a breakfast credit per person was provided for the restaurant onsite. Currently, the hotel does not charge a destination/resort fee, but we think it will be introduced after the soft launch period is over. Parking is $30 per day in a covered lot for self-parking.
OVERALL: 85.8
Would we stay again? Yes! We want to go back to blend our bottle of wine!
