BBQ in Austin: Micklethwait Craft Meats

Micklethwait Food Trailer Austin Texas BBQ

If you want good barbecue but don’t want to deal with lineups at Franklin’s and want a more unique and casual setting than La Barbecue, you’ll love Micklethwait Craft Meats; it’s one of our favourite barbecue experiences in Austin and is on Texas Monthly’s Top 50 Barbecue Joints in Texas list. It continues to remain a low key, good food and service, wait in line BBQ food truck experience.

They usually have free cans of craft beer on Saturdays and every time we’ve shown up around 10:00-10:45 we haven’t had to wait more than 30-45 minutes. I love their lemon poppy seed slaw, their brisket, sausages, barbacoa and pulled goat are all solid (we’ve never been disappointed). I hear their Frito pie is pretty legit too. It’s also BYOB so you can bring your own beers too. This plate was for 2 people and we were pretty full after. We usually order: 1 sausage link, 1/4 of pulled pork or lamb, 1/2 pound of brisket, a small potato salad and a small poppyseed coleslaw.

TIP: Micklethwait is closed Mondays and opens at Tuesdays through Sunday. If you are visiting on Sunday and bringing your own beer, purchase it on Saturday as Texas law prohibits the sale of alcohol until 12:00 on Sundays (this law may change soon though!).

  • Rating: 20/20 – We would visit again.
