The hotel also offers a shuttle to and from Ubud for guests a few times daily. For leisure, enjoy massages and body treatments at Purist spa or take up a cooking lesson. Alternatively, staff can conduct yoga lessons or organize day trips. We stayed in a Bamboo Villa that was tastefully furnished with traditional Indonesian artefacts. The rooms best features are the large bathroom and outdoor space. The large bathroom has a shower and a bathtub with an industrial concrete look and Balinese accents, including Balinese terracotta tiles in the bathtub. The outdoor space is covered and looks onto the pool and jungle. The pool is large and has traditional Balinese water fountain that spouts water for an extra calming atmosphere . The room also comes with two yoga mats and there is space to do yoga on the lower balcony while listening to the river. The restaurant onsite, Café Balisimo is a full-service restaurant open most of the day in an open air environment with covered and uncovered seating. They offer up Indonesian fare as well as western fare and have daily 3 course meals specials. There are lots of healthy options for all dietary preferences, including vegan meals. The Slow is set in Canggu, 500 metres from Batu Bolong Beach. Located only a 10-minute walk to Echo Beach, the boutique accommodation features local culture and eclectic art collection in every room type. Guests can enjoy all day dining and drinking. Some suites at The Slow come with a private plunge pool and native wood furnishings. Certain rooms feature floor-to-ceiling windows that allow natural lights, while others include views of the pool or garden. Each room is fitted with a private bathroom fitted with a rain shower. You will find a 24-hour front desk at the property, as well as valet parking, luggage storage and currency exchange services. The hotel also offers car hire and airport shuttle with additional charges. While we enjoyed our stay at The Slow and highly recommend it, we are not sure if we want to go back to Canggu due to the party vibe and how noisy it was with the motorbikes. • To enjoy a similar experience to Ubud but away from the crowds: Samanvaya

Located on the rice terraces of Sidemen Valley, Samanvaya offers a peaceful adults only getaway an hour’s drive from Ubud. Nestled into the picturesque Sidemen Valley, Samanvaya’s ‘Adults only Luxury Resort and Spa is surrounded by verdant rice fields, rolling hills, tropical forests, and authentic temples and cultural sites. Eleven separate accommodation lodges have been meticulously designed for comfort, privacy, and views to the surrounding area. All rooms have Balinese style open / semi open living and sleeping arrangements with open air bathrooms featuring indoor landscaping, outside relaxation areas, and combined views of either the rice terraces, swimming pool, or lush gardens. The following villas have private pools: Rice Barn Villa, Samudra Villa, and the Asmara Villa. The Rice Barn Villa and Samudra Villa offer the best views. We would recommend spending 3 nights here as this part of Bali is more remote but does make it easier to explore the east coast of Bali. You can visit some of the beaches, plan to hike Mount Batur, or go to Bali Asli Restaurant for a meal or for a cooking class (we did this in 2013). If we get to visit Bali again, Samanvaya is at the top of our list to stay at!

Potato Head Suites, formerly Katamama, is a hotel comprised of studios and suites in Seminyak near Petitenget. The hotel has an upscale hip vibe that blends relaxation but also here to party with VIP access to the popular Potato Head Club and in-room bars that rival trendy bars in large cities. We stayed here in a pool suite when it was Katamama and enjoyed our stay, as it was surprisingly quiet despite being near beach clubs and the W Hotel Seminyak Bali. Potato Head Suites is also home to an impressive line of restaurants, like Kaum and Ijen, which feature upscale Indonesian food onsite. If you do not want to leave the hotel grounds, you do not have to. There is enough here to keep you busy for a few days at least, as the hotel offers art and wellness activities, co-working spaces, or you can just sleep, eat, party, go to the beach, and repeat. If you are looking for the traditional Bali, you may feel disappointed but if you want the more hipster Bali experience, this might be for you. The hotel’s designs and attributes are admirable.  As much as we appreciate what Seminyak has to offer, we have been often enough now and would consider exploring other parts of Bali.
