At a glance:
With over 1,600 rooms across two Marina front towers, the Sheraton San Diego Resort charms, but comes with some downfalls. As a full service resort with a wide variety amenities and close proximity to the airport, it serves multiple purposes.
What is actually is: A Sheraton with (…almost …) Westin vibes
What it is not: What you may expect from a Sheraton
Time of year: Spring
Room Type: Deluxe King Room, Skyline View
Scores:
Hotel Design: 80 – A large hotel that reminds you of a Waikiki style resort, with two towers on the marina separated by a path. The resort feels like two properties, each with distinctive atmospheres.
Location: 80 – Located a 20 minute walk from the San Diego International Airport on the marina, it is convenient
Sleep: 78 – The bed and pillows were pretty comfortable for good sleep, but the sound proofing due to an adjoining room and a view of the active runway are not optimal for light sleepers. We ended up with noisy neighbours the 2nd evening who spoke loudly and watched TV until 2am which made sleep difficult.
Service: 78 – It is a busy hotel, but overall service was good. The front desk is always very busy and service can feel a little rushed. Service at breakfast was above expectations.
Room Design: 79 – We were in the renovated tower and the room design had modern accents with a seaside theme. Our room had a nice view of the airport runway, the marina, and the city skyline. The bedroom area was spacious and the bathroom felt a little smaller, as expected. The adjoining room configuration was a downside.
Room Amenities: 85 – The room had a mini fridge, a safe, a decent balcony with table and chairs, a plastic water pitcher for filtered water from a machine down the hallway, and a Keurig machine for coffee.
Hotel Amenities: 82 – The hotel has a wide range of amenities: a few pools (including an adult pool) spread amongst each towers, a large gym in the renovated tower, a few restaurants and bars (including a craft brewery onsite, Brewery X from Barrio Logan), and amenities included in the resort fee, like SUP and 1 hour bike rentals.
Vibe: 80 – Resort meets airport hotel: A mix of Californians and other tourists on a weekend getaway, and people on a layover.
Cleanliness/Maintenance: 85 – Cleanliness and maintenance were very good, as expected for a renovated room. The common areas of the other tower undergoing renovations were nice too, but in need of a refresh.
Value / Extras & Perks: 89 – As Marriott Titanium members, we received a room upgrade to a Skyline view room, the complimentary breakfast was excellent with high quality items well executed, but the resort and parking fees are high (as expected).
OVERALL: 81.6
